there really arent any ghettos in L.A, and L.A is close to everything so even if you cant get a job in the inner city just travel or work in DOwntown or something.

but the picture of a ghetto that most envision is one of run-down buildings, trash littered streets, junkies in every alley, that kinda of stuff, therefore i asked the question because in many cities there seems to be more abundant ghettoes everywhere you turn, BUT IN L.A.?
Tell me where? Pico Union, Sur Centro/South central?
Are they really Ghetto?

I'll take that as a compliment, lolWIP wrote:Lone you put up too many posts to ask a question like that? somebody must have hacked your name or maybe i just dont get what you askin.
The reason i put up the question is because we hear a lot of talk from people that say they grew up in the ghetto (L.A.), west coast music makes references to the ghetto life, hollywood has portrayed the ghetto as synonymous with the Barrios and Neighborhoods of South L.A. and Street Gangsters are associated in the media with ghettoes.
I know we got some real focked up areas (economic wise) in Los Angeles, but for the most part "we ain't got no ghettoes", correct?
Not even the projects themselves can be portrayed as ghettoes - apartment wise that is.

to me..ghettos are dirty and nasty as fuck
a place with a high crime rate to me is a bad neighborhood..

Re: IS THERE GHETTOES IN L.A.?
the reason westcoast ghettos don't look as "bad" as those in the east or the south is because the westcoast as a whole is newer than everywhere else. everybody knows that this land was established from east to west. the houses, everythin' is older out east and down south.
a ghetto is a place where poverty is the majority. ghettos may look different, but no one ghetto is "ghetto" than another. my babysis' house in the eastside of gardena was ghetto-lookin'. run-down bathrooms, kitchens, etc...but it was liveable...

Re: IS THERE GHETTOES IN L.A.?
Just on a surface level, coming from Cali and you see them big ass PJ's, you see the buildings in the Bronx or you go to Brownsville or the Dunbar Apts. in Harlem they look intimidating. Roaches, rats, overpopulation, all types of nasty smells from the street, crack vials, crackheads, etc. The thing is, it's just in the structuring, it don't make the people or place any more hood. LA got its own type of hoodness. The heat, the palm trees, the wide open spaces, it's like a big ass parking lot, the barred windows and iron gates on a sunny backdrop makes that shit unique, and definitely just as 'ghetto' as any place out here. The people are a little wilder, a little crazier in LA, but I'd say NY'ers are a little tougher.
Like kiCKer said, NY is built UP, LA is built OUT, so what you have is LA is more 'hood' in a sense that hoods are easy to distinguish, poverty is spread out, isolated, and marinated in heat, and NY is 'ghetto' because you pile all these people together in a more difficult living situation and freeze dry it. LOL

the projects in L.A are pretty nice actually. I woulodnt mind living in one. They are also multicultural.
Re: IS THERE GHETTOES IN L.A.?
from what I have herd projects in L.A. aren't as multicultural as in NY. my cousin went to school in the bronx his whole life and actually knew a bunch of white kids from the projects. i knew of a few asians from some black projects as well. i don't think your going to find too many whites or asians living in the nickerson gardens, but then again i could be wrong.Invincible wrote:the projects in L.A are pretty nice actually. from what Cold Bear said, i think its 100% true.

Re: IS THERE GHETTOES IN L.A.?
See that's the point, i don't beleive that just because a neighborhood is ghetto that aUtomatically the place is more crime infested, surely that is what is attributed to them but i find this to be a white-wash by the authorities.
Since there really is'nt any ghettoes in L.A. that compare to Baltimore's, Philadelphia's, Detroit's, New York City's, yet the notoriety of L.A's. gangland is "indisputable", so can you really attribute this to "ghettoes"?
Take for instance Los AVENUES Gang, one of the most largest and well known key-players in north East L.A. you can't tell me that they live in a ghetto, check out their neighborhoods, and i say it in plural because they are from Highland Park & Eagle Rock to Glendale, are they ghetto? NO!
I can put down a whole list of like-wise Gangs in non-ghetto neighborhoods that are as hard if not harder that a lot of ghetto gangs.
So while the term 'RAISED IN THE GHETTO' can bring instant recognition, i don't buy one bit that that is where the hardest people are at - because as most of us would agree so far 'THERE AIN'T NO GHETTOES IN L.A.'

That's true in a way. I wonder if an asian or white applies for public housing in L.A or L.A county where does he go?se11 wrote:from what I have herd projects in L.A. aren't as multicultural as in NY. my cousin went to school in the bronx his whole life and actually knew a bunch of white kids from the projects. i knew of a few asians from some black projects as well. i don't think your going to find too many whites or asians living in the nickerson gardens, but then again i could be wrong.Invincible wrote:the projects in L.A are pretty nice actually. Somebody out here put me up on Mike Davis, who talks about why LA is how it is in City of Quartz. What makes it a place where violence spreads. I found this on the web after I looked up 'City of Quartz'.

Re: IS THERE GHETTOES IN L.A.?
no, the ones i knew were poor asian families from the projects, and i'm guessing the white guys my cousin knew were the same. nobody wants to move into the projects, they do it because it's affordable.
