Burbank 13

Many neighborhoods can not maintain themselves with the level of competition. They may get pulled into other neighborhoods or they just fade out. Only discuss those areas from LOS ANGELES that are gone.

December 5, 1987

The sentencing of a teenager on friday to 38 years to life in state prison for murder marked the final chapter of a Burbank, California gang that had been involved in violence and vandalism for more than 15 years, authorities said. For years and years, these guys were involved in gang related homicides, drive by shootings, assaults, drug related offenses, almost like a legacy handed down from more senior members to the junior members, Burbank Police Detective Edward B. Skvarna said of the gang known as "Burbank Trece" or "Burbank Trece Rifa". But today the gang is all but non existent, he said, because of the arrest of Ralph Hernandez and five other gang members, which left a void in their leadership ranks.

Hernandez was convicted in July 1987 by a los angeles superior court jury of the first degree murder of Juan Ruvalcaba, a member of a rival gang, Ruvalcaba was killed outside of his Burbank home on December 28, 1985. Hernandez was also convicted of the attempted murder of Ruvalcaba's friend, Heriberto Sanchez Esparza. In addition, he was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and to commit assault with a deadly weapon, said deputy dist. atty. Loren M. Naiman.

Hernandez shot 20 year old Ruvalcaba with a .22 caliber revolver as he sat talking to a friend outside his west verdugo avenue house. Hernandez initally shot Ruvalcaba in the head, then in the thigh and testicles, he said. Once Ruvalcaba was down, Hernandez and four other men began beating him with a 4 foot long steel weapon. Within three days of the incident, the six leaders of the gang were arrested. All but one have been arrested, Skvarna said, the sixth is to go on trial in January.

Skvarna said Burbank Trece had been the most visible gang in Burbank, California, with its members swelling at times to about 50 members ranging in age from 14 to 21. Skvarna said his belief that the Burbank Trece gang had died out was confirmed recently when a 19 year old Burbank Trece gang member told him that he wanted to leave the gang, but couldnt find other members to jump him out. The detective said that he believed Hernandez who was 17 years old at the time of the slaying, was trying to make a name for himself within the group. The incident occurred after graffiti scrawled on a burbank building by Burbank Trece members was crossed out and replaced with the insignia of a rival gang in Cypress Park in northeast Los Angeles.

The action was interpreted as a symbolic challenge to the gang, and the six Burbank Trece members arrested vowed to get revenge on Lil Juan Ruvalcaba, a member of a rival gang.

So.. it looks like Burbank Trece went defunct around the late 80's, due to killing a rival gang member either from Avenues or Cypress Park 13, just because they crossed out their gang on a building in burbank, california.
