".....The rest are in the Adjustment Center, where the "worst of the worst" are housed, including the most violent members of the Mexican Mafia and the Aryan Brotherhood. These inmates get their exercise in 8-by-10-foot cages overlooked by gun-wielding guards. It is where Paul "Roscoe" Tuilaepa, considered the most dangerous inmate in San Quentin, lives. Tuilaepa, who shot four men in a Long Beach bar in 1986, killing one, has forced four guards to retire because he beat them so badly, said Lt. Michael Barker, who is in charge of the unit.
"He is on indefinite leg irons," Barker said. "He tries to kick somebody every time the leg irons are taken off."
A few years ago, gang members were foiled in an elaborate plan to take over the Adjustment Center. One of the leaders, Paul "Roscoe" Tuilaepa, reportedly told prison officials after he was captured that the intent was never to escape. "We just wanted to kill every guard we could get our hands on," he said.
The incident began shortly after noon on July 18, when a group of condemned inmates, identified as gang members, unraveled a four- foot section of a chain-link fence along the so-called Crip Yard, an exercise yard named for the prison gang. It is situated near the Adjustment Center, which houses more than 100 of the prison's most dangerous criminals.
INMATES USED OPENING
An officer named D. Cordona noticed the gash in the fence about 12:30 p.m., according to the prison report. The opening gave the inmates access to a walkway guards use to escort handcuffed inmates to and from the Adjustment Center, correctional sources said.
Lt. Frank Cerecedes immediately ordered Cordona to sound the portable alarm guards carry for such situations, summoning about 60 officers from throughout the prison. But those officers were far away.
A second guard, Sgt. Ken McLean, grabbed a 37mm gun that fires wooden blocks, each one about 1.5 inches thick. He aimed it at the inmates from a nearby building, Blanson said.
"Lt. Cerecedes ran to the back door of the unit," the report said, while McLean, his stun gun at the ready, "took a defensive stance."
Cerecedes then ordered that part of the prison locked down, trapping the inmates inside the walkway and away from most of the prison staff. But it was still not over.
To the guards' astonishment, the three inmates -- convicted murderers Paul Tuilaepa, Tiequon Cox and Noel Jackson -- rushed through the hole in the fence, several feet away from them and lunged toward Officer Marcie Mann and Officer W. Whitlow."
