New prison gang emerging as major drug player

10:38 PM CDT on Monday, June 25, 2007

By Jeff McShan / 11 News

Houston narcotics officers Monday raided a home in the Heights. A home they said was a stash house for what is fast becoming a notorious prison gang.

Monday’s raid turned up an undetermined amount of marijuana and cocaine as well drug paraphernalia. Officers also confiscated at least one weapon and arrested a pair of suspected gang members.

The gang is known as the Houstones and the members are identified by tattoos that resemble the Houston Astros logo. The two suspected gang members arrested Monday were out on parole and supported the gang’s logo on their necks.

The power for the Houstones though exists behind prison walls. It is from the state’s prisons that the gang is able to run its criminal operations police told 11 News.

The gang is growing in strength taking over the turf for other prison gangs.

This week in fact, more than 500 law enforcement personnel are in Austin meeting to discuss gang activity in Texas. Among the gangs at the top of that list is the Houstones.

That reporter kept referring to the Texas Department of Corrections. That is incorrect.

The main 2 Hispanic prison gangs were

Texas Syndicate
Mexican Mafia of Texas (not related to MM of California)

Barrio Azteca(el paso cons)
United Raza
then that Tango blast dynamic.

Houstones are not actually considered a prison gang. There was an article on them in The Houston Press a few months back. They're more of a protection type thing in prison from others.
