Twenty students are detained at Hawthorne High in what officials say could have been a racially motivated brawl.

Police used pepper spray to break up a melee that erupted on the Hawthorne High School campus today and detained 20 students for questioning in what possibly was a gang-related, racially motivated fight.
About 60 police officers from five South Bay police forces rushed to the campus about 1 p.m. Students said eight to 10 students began fighting near the cafeteria during the lunch period, and soon were surrounded by 50 others.
"Cops just pepper-sprayed everybody," said Chris Chihuahua, a 16-year-old displaying bloodshot, watery eyes.
Students said the fight involved Tongans and Latinos.
"They were just stomping out," said Sergio Villa, 14, stomping his foot onto the ground to show how students kicked others who had fallen down. "Then it was like a giant group watching. It was unexpected. I didn't know what to do."
Although paramedics were called to the campus at Inglewood Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard, no students required hospitalization. Parent Carlos Sanchez said he was called to the school to pick up his son, who had been pepper-sprayed.
Tensions were high on campus by the time the fight broke out at 1:15 p.m., said Centinela Valley Union High School District Superintendent Cheryl White.
A former student was shot Wednesday night and a smaller skirmish among students took place during lunch at nearby Eucalyptus Park.
Hawthorne police Lt. Tom Jester said a school resource officer found the students engaged in a small disturbance and sent them back to school. About an hour later, the fight erupted in the middle of the campus, apparently involving the same students.
Student Edson Bucio, 14, said the Tongan and Latino students don't get along.
"They just started throwing it up," he said, adding that the "skaters" also became involved in the melee.
Police officers swarmed onto the campus to quell the fight. Some students hurled plastic bottles and other debris at them, Jester said.
"The officers deployed pepper spray on campus," he said.
Dozens of police cars from Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, El Segundo and the Sheriff¹s Department surrounded the campus, blocking streets. Officers clad in riot helmets and carrying shotguns that fire bean bag rounds quieted the fighting.
Officers took about 15 minutes to break up the groups, White said.
Twenty students were detained for questioning as the rest of the student body was ordered to their classrooms. District officials soon decided to slowly release the students early from the Inglewood Avenue gate.
Police officers directed them to walk north. Some students called parents on cellular telephones, asking to be picked up.
"I don't know what's going on," said one mother walking on El Segundo Boulevard. "I'm just trying to get to the gate to get my child."
Jester said it was unclear immediately if any of the detained students would be arrested. Charges could include assault.
"We are looking into the possibility it may have been racially motivated," Jester said.
There were no injuries and no weapons found, White said.

Calm returned to the Hawthorne High School campus on Friday, a day after a lunchtime gang fight escalated into an attack on police officers.
Hawthorne police revealed new details about what happened Thursday inside the campus, including the fact that students purchased some 50 plastic bottles of soda from vending machines and hurled them unopened at police officers.
"It looks like they had a plan," Hawthorne police Lt. Mike Ishii said. "As soon as the bell rang, that was the bell to start."
The disturbance began the night before with a shooting in Lennox that apparently involved Tongan and Latino gang members.
The bad feelings -- either gang-related or racially motivated, or both -- continued on campus during the lunch hour, Ishii said.
Several fights broke out, and dozens of students surrounded the matches to watch, but Hawthorne police called to the campus quelled the problems.
"We were able to contain the situation; however, once the bell to go back to class rang, then numerous fights broke out and officers immediately began taking bottles and cups thrown at us," Ishii said.
He said a carton of chocolate milk hit him, bottles struck a female officer in the hand and a male officer in the back of the head, and another officer was hit in the head by a hurled metal trash can.
Police quickly called for assistance. Officers from Inglewood, Gardena, El Segundo and the Sheriff's Department swarmed onto the campus. In total, about 60 officers were at the scene.
Although two students contacted the Daily Breeze on Friday to say police officers struck teenagers with batons and shocked them with Taser guns, Ishii said that was not the case.
Officers did use pepper spray during the melee and held their batons as they escorted students from the area, Ishii said. Though officers had Taser weapons, they did not use them, Ishii said.
Sixteen-year-old sophomore Sofia Lamica disagreed, saying a male friend of hers was shot with a Taser.
"He was still twitching like a half-hour later," she said.
Lamica said students screamed and cried when sprayed with pepper-spray.
"It was so stupid there," Lamica said. "One cop stood there and he was smiling and spraying everyone and living it up."
Once police quashed the melee, the lunch period was shortened and students were moved back to class. They were systematically released from school about 2 p.m. and told to walk north on Inglewood Avenue.
Sheriff's deputies carrying shotguns that fire beanbag rounds kept the crowds moving.
One student was arrested for throwing a bottle at a police officer. About 21 others were cited for unruly conduct and other offenses.
All could face suspension, and potentially expulsion, Centinela Valley Union High School District Superintendent Cheryl White said.
White said no knives or guns were found. Mayor Larry Guidi, she said, had Hawthorne police officers search the campus with a police dog overnight to make sure no weapons or drugs were on campus.
On Friday, Hawthorne police kept watch before school, during the lunch period and after classes ended. No problems occurred, but one student was arrested for an infraction, Ishii said.
Attendance at the 2,700-student campus was down about 20 percent Friday. A telephone message to students' homes advised them about expected behavior at school and about resolving issues in a nonviolent manner.

She added that the campus has well-trained safety officers, teachers and administrators are involved in school safety, and students can participate in conflict-resolution programs.
Although the gang fight and melee brought the school attention, White pointed out that some current students have been accepted to Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Shhhh, when I was in LA I saw plenty of black kids with Mexican chicks. I also so many with Pinays and other Asian girls. of Asian chicks, mainly Chinese, Japanese, and Korean with white dudes. Pretty much the same paradigm existed in Northern California where I lived for awhile, again, FAR different than the East Coast.
