LOS ANGELES -- Four males were killed and five other victims were hospitalized in a series of unrelated shootings overnight in Los Angeles County, authorities reported Sunday.

The violence included the following reports:

-More than 30 minutes later a man was shot and killed as he approached the front door of a home in the 2900 block of Rimpau Boulevard near Baldwin Village, police said. Victim Larick Matheson, 58, was reportedly trying to pick up a car key from someone.

-In Los Angeles County, in the San Gabriel Valley city of Industry, two people were injured at a party after attendees tried to disarm a man with a gun and about four shots were fired. The victims sustained gunshot wounds to their legs in the 11 p.m. violence at 249 Fifth Ave., authorities said. A suspect was arrested and a .38 caliber gun was recovered.

-In Highland Park, a 13-year-old boy was shot twice in the face near Meridian and North Figueroa streets shortly after 11 p.m., police said. The teen was hospitalized in critical condition.

-Gunfire broke out shortly after midnight in the 6400 block of Seventh Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood of L.A. According to police, someone fired at a group of people who were on the porch of a residence. Brandon Jamal Perry, 17, was shot in the face and later died at a hospital. A man and a woman in their mid-20s survived and were hospitalized after sustaining gunshot injuries.

-About 7 a.m. Sunday the body of a man who appeared to be in his mid-30s was found in Glassell Park about 7 a.m. Sunday, police said. He had sustained a gunshot to his head. The discovery was made in the 3400 block of Drew Street, a thoroughfare notorious for its gang warfare and recent efforts by the city and police to make it safer.

When it comes to homicides, the month of August is traditionally the deadliest in Los Angeles.
