Revealed: the face of the first European
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
35,000-year-old skull fragments found in Romania are made flesh by scientists

This is the face of the first anatomically-modern human to live in Europe. It belonged to a man – or woman – who inhabited the ancient forests of the Carpathian Mountains in what is now Romania about 35,000 years ago.

The artist's reconstruction – a face that could be male or female – is based on the partial skull and jawbone found in a cave where bears were known to hibernate. The facial features indicate the close affinity of these early Europeans to their immediate African ancestors, although it was still not possible to determine the person's sex.

Richard Neave, the forensic artist who reconstructed the facial features in this clay model, based his assessment on a careful measurement of the bone fragments and his long experience of how the soft tissues of the face are built around the bones of the skull.

The reconstruction was made for the forthcoming BBC 2 series The Incredible Human Journey which documents human origins and evolution, from our birthplace in Africa to the long migratory routes that led us to populate the most distant parts of the globe. It is impossible from the bones to determine the skin colour of the individual, although scientists speculate it was probably darker than modern-day Europeans, reflecting a more recent African origin.

Mr Neave's clay head of the "first modern European" now sits on the desk of Alice Roberts, the Bristol University anthropologist who will introduce the BBC series, which is scheduled for screening next Sunday evening on BBC 2. "It's really quite bizarre. I'm a scientist and objective, but I look at that face and think 'Gosh, I'm actually looking at the face of somebody from 40,000 years ago', and there's something weirdly moving about that," Dr Roberts told the Radio Times.

"Richard creates skulls of much more recent humans and he's used to looking at differences between populations. He said the skull doesn't actually look European, or Asian, or African. It looks like a mixture of all of them. And you think, well, that's probably what you'd expect of someone who was among the earliest populations to come to Europe."

Potholers discovered the lower jawbone of the first modern European in 2002 in Pestera cu Oase, the "cave with bones", located in the south-western Carpathians. The remaining fragments of skull were unearthed in 2003.

Scientists have dated the bones using radiocarbon analysis to between 34,000 and 36,000 years ago when Europe was occupied by both Neanderthal man, who had lived in the region for tens of thousands of years, and anatomically-modern humans – Homo sapiens – who had recently arrived on a migratory route from Africa via the Middle East.

Although the skull shares many modern feature of human anatomy, it also displays more archaic traits, such as very large molar teeth, which led some scientists to speculate the skull may belong to a hybrid between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals – an idea discounted by other experts.

Erik Trinkaus, professor of anthropology at Washington University in Missouri, and one of the first specialists to study the bones in detail, said the jaw was the oldest, directly-dated modern human fossil. "Taken together, the material is the first that securely documents what modern humans looked like when they spread into Europe," he said.

I seen this earlier. Amazing what computers can do.

I don't see all the fuss being made about the earliest Euro's appearing "African"...it's been well-established among the academic community that life first appeared in Africa for ages now.

What the fuck? 35,000 years old and in Romania? :/ This is the skull of a Macedonian

Image

The skull of the 25- 30 year - old young man, discovered in the "Crveni steni" cave near the village of Kameni Gumna (Petralona) in the Aegean part of Macedonia (600.000- 160.000 BC)

Thanks to archaeological excavations, archaeological linguistics, and generally the Ancient Macedonian Linguistics, during the last ten years an absolutely new chronology on the cultural continuity of the Macedonian people and oldest life on the Macedonian Peninsula - the Balkans - has been established. No longer can anyone deny the fact that the skull of the 25 - 30 year-old young man, discovered in the Crveni Steni cave near the village of Kameni Gumna (Patralona) in the Aegean pat of Macedonia, is evidence for the Macedonians that in Macedonia people walked upright and used their head to think at least 600,000 - 160,000 BC, or which, using a more precise method, has been confirmed to date from 260,000 - 240,000 BC.

Not an offer, a request that hasn't been filled out yet. Can you delete all my threads and posts with this account? Pretty please with sugar on top?

On a side note, the only reason I even bothered coming back to the race and ethnicity forum and started being racist against blacks here was to get your attention. Now that I have a mod's attention, can you fill out my request and you have my guarentee I'll be civil.

Just look back through all my posts and see that all this started when I wanted the request filled out. Sorry for all the commotion but I really, really desperetly need to get all my threads and posts deleted.

the facial reconstruction artist obviously chose to make that person very dark skinned and full lipped to make him/her look African. You can't tell skin color and fleshy features from a fossil skull. That person wasn't from Africa. Thousands of years seperated that person from Africa. The ancestors of modern Europeans came from West and Central Asia. In life that man/woman probably had light brown skin like a native american or central asian, not a black person. And where's the hair? Maybe in life that individual had a full head of wavy/straight brown hair. Pure propaganda.

Thats what I was thinking but I didn't comment on it because I didn't want to make the mistake of saying they couldn't figure out the skin color from fossils and bones. How about the DNa from those bones??

i found something of some interest on the net. It aint my views though, but an interesting theory nevertheless

Black Like The Ancient Europeans: The Black (First) Europeans

BLACK LIKE THE FIRST EUROPEANS

The first people of Europe were prehistoric Africans. They lived mostly in the southern parts of Europe, and created many paintings and cave art throughout the region.

Pretentious scholars struggling with their self-inflicted racist diseases attach ill-fitting names to the first peoples of Europe. They call them funny names like Neanderthals, Paleolithic men, Mesolithic or Neolithic, Cro-Magnons, Grimaldi, Aurignicians, in a desperate bid to hide the cultural and historical identity of those people.

It is generally conceded by those scholars however, that the African people were the bearers of the first substantive elements of culture into the European continent.

Many thousands of years before the rise of the current pale tribes of Europe, an Afrocoid people known as the Grimaldi people, established the Aurignacian cultures. These people were anatomically modern human beings of the West African typology. They brought the first indications of cultural thoughts and rites into Europe.

The Grimaldi were Black Africans with very little body hair, black and smooth skin; they had the facial features typical of West African forest dwellers. They had kinky hair too. They arrived in Europe 40,000 to 50,000 years ago.

They ranged in height from tall to medium. Their culture had developed in Africa tens of thousands of years before they moved to Europe. It was called the Arugnician Culture. In 1994, scientists found corroborating evidence of stone and bone tools on the banks of the Semlike River in Zaire. They were finely crafted tools made between 75,000 to 100,000 years old long before modern humans migrated to Europe.

The Neanderthals non-modern human specie of man had left Africa early in time (80,000 years ago) and settled in central and southern Europe. It is speculated by bio-anthropologists that the genes of those Neanderthals are extensively sown in the modern European tribes of today.

The “Cro-Magnon,” people, late contemporaries and perhaps descendants of the Grimaldi people also existed in Central and Southern Europe many thousands of years after the Grimaldi Negroid had expanded to Europe but before the appearance of the pale version of Europe now known as Caucasians.

Actually, Caucasians as a race did not appear in Europe until about twenty to thirty thousand years after the arrival of the first Africans who by this very fact are the aboriginals of Europe.

WHENCE COMETH THE PALE ONE

There are many theories which seek to explain the reason for the switch in skin color of the Europeans. The theories proposed range from the Ice-Age effect theory, to those of miscegenation and others that suggest malnutrition. In all these theories lies the admission that the pale skin is a relatively recent genetic modification that occurred in originally Black Europe.

One of the more interesting propositions suggest that the change from black to pale Europe occurred as a result of miscegenation between the modern Africans arrivals in Europe and the primordial Neanderthal which had originally come from Africa. It should be noted that the primordial human Neanderthal (physiologically and intellectually) said to be among the ancestors of Europeans and Caucasians, also came from Africa to Europe about 80,000 years ago. Thus, the Neanderthal, which had apparently been forced to Eurpe from out of Africa, was also of the African genotype.

Some theories suggest that Neanderthals (who were originally black as all original Africans) later became pale-skinned and retained excessive body hair due to genetic selection responding to the need to adapt to the cold and darkness of Ice-Age Europe.

The modern day Europeans are the products of interbreeding between these mutated pale skin Neanderthals (i.e. mutated non modern-human Africa) and the later arriving modern black Africans of 40,000 -10,000 years ago i.e. the Grimaldis.

Warm blooded animals undergo de-pigmentation in the absence of light and warmth. If there were no Ice Age in Europe, the people would have remained Negroid/Black. Some of the darkest Africoid peoples still exist as the Australian Aborigines and Tasmanians. Their ancestors left Africa in the same waves as the Africans that went to Europe. It appears that of the anatomically modern human Africans who had migrated around the globe, those in the warmer southern climates retained their African pigmentation and those in the Northern climates lost theirs as a result of miscegenation with the pale skinned Neanderthals, who it should not be forgotten were originally of the African continent.

It's amazing how PC and afro-centric anthropologists seem to find the light skin of North East Asian and lighter skinned Native Americans to be completely normal and natural but are always trying to explain how European light skin is some kind of freaky genetic mutation. A little biased, maybe?

Its all genetical mutation. Thats why black skin develops in sunny areas. It protects from skin cancer. Black people have a much lesser risk of getting skin cancer then white people. At the end of the day our whole human shape is owed to adaption to the environment.

I agree, his writing is a little bias.

But genetic mutation does not tend to be a freaky and does not naturally occur overnight in humans or in any species.
Remember, this is over thousands and thousands of years. It isn't hard to imagine.

Adaptations can been seen in organism/animal generations over relatively short periods of time, because they have shorter lifespans.

Humans are probably the most complex of all animals and have some of the longest lifespans.

Like Sentanza said, "our whole human shape is owed to adaption to the environment."

Not nessicairly, in order for humans to survive the DNA needs to restructure according to the enviroment.

Reptiles don't have that problem, so it's not 'all' species.
