When i was in Mexico gringo meant anyone american. When it was found out im Canadian people stopped calling me gringo and called me by my name.
I was just in chile and gringo means apparently a foreigner just as it does in Argentina where iam currently right now.... Its not offensive and ive never took it offensively...
Whats the big deal about the word anyways?
Gringo
