Police not talking about latest homicide
By Mark Baylis/Staff Writer

A week after Michael Allen Christie died from a shotgun wound to the chest, Santa Maria Police remain tight-lipped about the city's most recent homicide.

Police have not released any information about a possible motive or suspect information in Christie's slaying. Christie died Dec. 10 shortly after he was found outside an apartment in the 900 block of Russell Street.

Police have confirmed that they have a suspect in the case, but have said that it could be awhile before the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office agrees they have enough evidence to arrest and hold anyone.

Estimates on when an arrest may be made range from next week to a month or two.

Police silence on a suspect is in contrast to their response to the Dec. 1 fatal stabbing of Jerry “J.R.” Christensen. Investigators immediately released information about a motive and announced the names of three suspects two days later when they arrested Jose Rafael Flores, 25, of Grover Beach as an accomplice to murder.

Flores was released Dec. 5, with police saying they didn't have enough evidence to hold him. They then shifted their primary suspect and announced a new motive, saying the stabbing wasn't over a jealous relationship but over an alleged theft of jewelry.

Lt. Larry Ralston said police's silence over the Christie case is not a reaction to their approach to the Christensen case.

Christie was a longtime resident, who is survived by two children, both of Santa Maria. Police say he had gang ties, but acquaintances have said he was no longer involved in gangs.

Police have made no other arrests in the Christensen case but say they know where their two other suspects - Marcos Martindelcampo, 23, and Franco Contreras Xicohtencatl, 28, are - in Mexico.

“We're working with the FBI to be able to go through Mexican federal agents,” Ralston said. “We're just waiting to have luck getting them down there.”
