SAN DIEGO -- A 25-year-old parolee accused of fatally shooting a man during a confrontation in the Gaslamp Quarter last weekend pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a murder charge.

Michael Bickham was chased down by officers after the 1:45 a.m. shooting Saturday on E Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues, Deputy District Attorney Frank Jackson said in court.

Bickham, who allegedly threw a gun and his jacket as he fled, was caught on F Street, the prosecutor said.

Ballistics tests matched the gun -- recovered at a nearby construction site -- with the bullet that struck 23-year-old Alton Gilbert in the stomach, Jackson said.

The victim, who lived with his family in Lincoln Park, was a former high school track athlete at Lincoln High. He worked as a security guard and planned a career in law enforcement, his sister said.

At the time of the shooting, Bickham, a Skyline gang member, was on probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm and a drug conviction, Jackson said.

Bickham was held on the alleged probation violations until he was charged Wednesday with Gilbert's murder, Jackson said, adding that the complaint includes a gang allegation.

The prosecutor told Judge David Szumowski that Bickham pulled out a gun and fatally shot the victim during a confrontation with Lincoln Park gangsters in the 500 block of E Street.

Two vehicles were also hit in the barrage of gunfire, police said.

Szumowski set Bickham's bail at $1 million and scheduled a March 8 status conference and March 14 preliminary hearing.

Bickham faces up to 45 years to life in prison if convicted, the prosecutor said.
