The arrested persons comprise people who belong to organized crime groups and hooligans who engage in violence at sporting events.

Veljovic said that the action in Novi Sad, northern Serbia, resulted in the seizure of over five kilos of heroin and the arrest of a great number of persons, while in Lazarevac, near Belgrade, 17 locations were searched.

Dacic: Police remands 127 people in detention

BELGRADE - Serbian Minister of Interior Affairs Ivica Dacicstated on Friday that the police arrested 127 individuals in police operation Thunder against drug smuggling rings and that the suspects have been remanded in detention.

Dacic told reporters in the Serbian government that the operation is still underway with the aim of preventing production, distribution and sale of drugs.

“This is a blow to the distributive network,” Dacic said and added that this is a part of the comprehensive fierce fight against organised crime, drugs, financial frauds and hooliganism.

Dacic noted that 909 sites in the territory of Serbia were searched in Operation Thunder, and added that the operation will continue.

The police also seized a number of weapons and drugs, and one murder case was also solved, Dacic said and expressed the expectation that 242 people will be prosecuted.

Dacic noted that he is satisfied with the coordination of all relevant services in Operation Thunder, and underscored that the national fight against organised crime and setting up rule of law constitute a priority.

Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Friday the police operation Thunder, which targeted people suspected of narcotics trafficking, was the most efficient operation of its kind in 25 years, adding that it would result in trials against at least 250 people.

Vucic, who is also the head of the bureau for coordination between security agencies, told reporters in Belgrade the police had searched 918 facilities across Serbia on Friday, and that in Belgrade alone, they found narcotics and weighing scales in 26 locations, proving that the suspects traded in narcotics, and not just used them.

The police and Prosecutor's Office deserve praise for the operation, he noted, adding that it was a world precedent to build cases against 250 suspects in just one day.

Vucic remarked that the operation had no connection with fugitive drug lord Darko Saric, but added that he believed Saric would be in Serbia very soon.

A service to combat drug traffickers will be set up very soon based on an order from the Security Service Coordination Bureau, Police Director Milorad Veljovic said Friday.

Operation Thunder (Grom), which is now being carried out throughout Serbia, confirms that forming a special service for the fight against drug dealers is justified, Veljovic told a news conference.

Results of the operation, he said, show that to set up a service for the fight against extremism and terrorism, which is another order by the Bureau, is also a good thing to do.

Veljovic said that Operation Thunder has so far resulted in arresting several extremists on suspicion of their being involved in drug dealing activities.

In November, the Security Service Coordination Bureau decided that the Ministry of Interior should form two new services - one for the fight against extremism and terrorism, and the other for the fight against drug dealers.

First Deputy Prime Minister and head of the Bureau Aleksandar Vucic then said that one of the fiercest ever crackdowns on drug dealers would soon follow.

“The fight will be ruthless, as we will not allow anyone to play with the government,” Vucic said, adding that drug dealers and those who use football supporter groups as a cover for their shady dealings will be hit very hard.

At about the same time, Prime Minister Ivica Dacic pointed out that the state administration is ready to confront any kind of extremism at sporting events and at political and other gatherings.

“In the coming period, the fight against extremism and terrorism, drugs and crime will be a key priority,” Dacic told reporters in the parliament.
