The Mongrel Mob have a membership of around 12,000 patched members and supporters, this is no exaggeration, and they're all tough s.o.b's , they normally get their patch after committing a serious crime, .ie, robbery, murder, assault, or their favourite pastime, gang rape (seriously, they boast about it in TV interviews), they normally reserve the gang rape for the youngest victims, there has been reports of girls as young as 13!

Not a bunch to have around anywhere, they are pure scum, think of the gang in Once Were Warriors but worse, no morals, big scary Maoris covered in crap tattoos willing to rob, rape or murder, just for fun!

The lowest form of scum to ever come out of NZ!

thay say Seig Heil Because they're idiots! They want to intimidate (and confuse) people, they also use a Bulldog wearing a German Helmet as their patch, I have also seen Nazi Battle Flags with their patch in the middle.

Their whole ideology is to initmidate and be mongrels, how and why they adopted the Nazi imagery and slogans, I'm not exactly sure.
just Mongrel Mob, the also use the moniker "Mighty Mongrel Mob" which explains the "MMM" and there alot of half cast's in the Mob, there are no full blooded Maoris anymore, so I guess they really are Mongrel's!

Wairoa’s Mongrel Mob
History: It is believed the term “Mongrel Mob” originated from the comments of a District Court Judge in the Wairarapa in the late 1960s when he referred to a group of men before him as “nothing but a pack of mongrels". The name stuck and later similarly named groups sprang up around the country, forming their own independent chapters.

Identity: The gang’s colours are predominantly red and black, and the logo a drawing of a bulldog. The gang’s “patch” or insignia is worn on the back of “patched” members – those considered loyal and trustworthy within the gang.

Our society nurtures male staunchness – from the boy who learns to take knocks like a man, to the man whose acceptance comes with being one of the boys.

Today there is a network of more than 30 Mongrel Mob chapters throughout New Zealand.

Membership: The Mongrel Mob is a (mostly) all male, non-motorcycle gang. It’s members are predominantly Mâori with some Pacific Islanders and Europeans. Within each chapter there are office holders, patched members, prospects and male and female associates. The office holders include President, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms.

Patched members have undergone a period of prospecting in order to attain their patch. Recently, it is believed, the time and the tasks required to prove worthy of the patch have been eased to enable more members to be patched.

Prospects are prospective patched members who undergo a period of time to test their loyalty within the gang. During this time they are expected to obey the instructions from patched members, which usually involves the commission of activities (sometimes unlawful) to further the interests of the gang. Prospects are also expected to commit more serious crimes on behalf of the patched members and if apprehended are expected to take the consequences without implicating any member of the hierarchy.

The Future: The continued existence of the Mongrel Mob in Wairoa is due to it’s continued popularity, particulary among Mâori youth. The perceived notoriety and lifestyle associated with gang membership appears an attractive alternative to successive generations of the unemployed and the disaffected.

Wairoa society provides the ideal climate – culturally, socially, historically, educationally, economically and philosophically – for gang formation and growth.

Recently, Wairoa Mayor Les Probert launched the “Reclaiming Wairoa” initiative aimed at putting an end to long-term gang tensions in the Wairoa district, calling for the Wairoa community to get behind this effort. The plan consists of two parts, one looking at police action and the other looking at social conditions that lead people into gangs.

Reducing or putting an end to gang tensions is one thing – getting rid of the gangs is an entirely different matter, and doomed to failure. New Zealand society nurtures and nourishes male staunchness – from the boy with the rugby ball who learns to take the scrums, mauls, tackles and knocks like a man, to the man whose sense of acceptance comes with being one of the boys.

Wairoa society provides the ideal climate – culturally, socially, historically, educationally, economically and philosophically – for gang formation and growth. The sense of whanau is also an important social dynamic, where gangs often provide the home, the hearth, and the family that is not available or appropriate elsewhere.

Ultimately, perhaps, gang troubles in Wairoa will only diminish when more jobs and better educational opportunities are available and when the community is more integrated. When that happens perhaps people may see less necessity for being involved in “gang” life, and become more interested in family and community life!

Frasertown’s Black Power Gang
The local Black Power chapter, based in Frasertown (8km from Wairoa), is a gang with some notoriety in the Wairoa District. They often wear distinctive patches and other gang paraphernalia, and facial and body tattoos are a common feature.

Black Power members from Auckland, New Zealand Aotearoa NZ

The gang insignia, a clenched fist, is derived from the U.S. Black Power movement of the 1960s, and the gang colours are predominantly blue and black.

A bitter rivalry exists between Frasertown’s Black Power and the more firmly entrenched Mongrel Mob in Wairoa, and extreme violence erupts between them from time to time.

Some people believe the local Black Power chapter at Frasertown evolved as a response to the Mongrel Mob’s ‘control’ of Wairoa. Others claim that the division of membership between the gangs runs along tribal lines, where rivalry has existed for generations.

In this respect one needs to recall that during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s Frasertown was a British garrison town on the front lines of conflict. The tribes of Wairoa proper were regarded as ‘loyal’ (to the Crown) and fought alongside the British colonial and New Zealand Militia forces, while the tribes around Frasertown and beyond, particularly in the Ureweras and Ruakituri areas, aligned themselves more closely with Te Kooti and other later ‘revolutionaries’ of the area, such as Rua Kenana.

Be that as it may. The Frasertown Black Power say that their existance is “not about controlling crime in the district", but about asserting their rights to “go about their lawful business in Wairoa without intimidation".

In a recent newspaper article Wairoa Police Sergeant Christopher Flood confirmed that the Mongrel Mob did harass, intimidate, and assault other people in the town wearing blue clothing and youngsters who did not want to join their gang.

Related Background Information
The following was extracted from A Brief History of Black Power (Sindi) Auckland - by Abraham Joseph Wharewaka Topia, President, Sindi Chapter, that previously existed on the www.blackpower.co.nz web site which was online from 2001 - 2003. The website is now defunct.

The Black Power gang was started in Aotearoa, New Zealand around 1968, by a group of young urban, predominantly Maori youth. Initially on the streets of Wellington and Auckland the gang over the years has spread to other major centers and rural towns throughout Aotearoa.

Today the Black Power are a multi cultural organization including Maori, Pakeha, Samoan, Tongan and Cook Island members.

Most of the clubs/chapters are into Harley Davidson and Triumph motor cycles along with American cars.

Black Power (Sindi) members at their Auckland pad

The Black Power website created quite a stir when it was “discovered” by the media, and for a few days in March 2001 the Black Power website was probably one of the busiest in New Zealand, on account of this story in the New Zealand Herald:

Gang website first in NZ
21.03.2001

The Black Power gang has joined the move to the net, posting what is thought to be the first website by a New Zealand ethnic gang.

Police believe the site is aimed at recruiting members and forging links with other clubs, and say it is only a matter of time before others follow suit. The website - located at www.blackpower.co.nz - belongs to the Sindi or Auckland branch of the gang and was launched last year.

By late yesterday, it had received more than 1000 hits. It has a homepage, history page, gallery page of 10 pictures of members, motorcycles and cars, and a “contact us” page. This page asks interested people to submit their name, name of their club, and contact details.

The history page, written by Sindi president Abraham Joseph Wharewaka Topia, tells browsers that the gang was formed in 1968 by a group of urban, mainly Maori youths. It started on the streets of Auckland and Wellington but has since spread to other urban and rural centres. The Sindi chapter joined the movement in 1978 and the site says the gang is multicultural.

Its members include Maori, Pakeha, Samoans, Tongans and Cook Islanders. Most of the chapters are devoted to Harley Davidson and Triumph motorcycles and American cars.

Police intelligence sources say they believe it is the first time a New Zealand ethnic gang has launched a website. Overseas, motorcycle gangs - including the Hells Angels - have sites.

Black Power in Auckland is believed to have more than 400 members, police say, and gang members have been convicted of crimes involving drugs, prostitution, fraud and dealing in stolen property.

A police source says the main ethnic gangs - the Black Power, Mongrel Mob, Nomads, Storm Troopers and King Cobras - co-operate to a large extent. Police believe it is a “strong possibility” that other ethnic gangs will also launch websites.

The Herald asked the Sindi chapter through its website for comment about its launch into cyberspace. Black Power last night said it would comment at a later date.

Interestingly, the www.blackpower.co.nz and www.mongrelmob.co.nz domain names are now registered to a Tax Accountant in Cromwell, Central Otago!

Street Wars

To often these days we read about another gang incident. It is either drug related or involves violence. In some Towns the gang conflict has become so often and so public that the residence of those towns are crying out for some action to be done to protect them. Many of these confrontations are now being waged within family homes or in broad daylight. Large scale street confrontations are something we expect to see on the news from other countries. Places where order and civilisation are struggling to keep a foot hold. But these are not; they are scary heavily tattooed men who use anything at their disposal to hurt their enemies on New Zealand streets. This violence is too often leading to death for some unfortunate victims on the receiving end. Most often it is gang members themselves, but now and then we see a teen age associate die because of an attack.
In recent years most gangs have kept a low profile and focused their energy on their business enterprises. But the Mongrel Mob and Black Power are continuing their war that has now gone on for 3 decades. It would be impossible to do a body count. Who would even try to guess how many people have been wounded. How many children have missed time with fathers and other family because they spend so much time in prison? This then helping to continue the cycle to yet another generation.
Over the decades we have seen many plans from the government and the police. They often work on the short term, long enough for another election or to keep things out of the media for awhile. But where are all the guys who put in so much good work to come up with realistic solutions. Men who worked hard on the street level to help the gangs to function as a working part of society. Many of these men were or are gang members themselves. Some of these projects worked so well they helped to create something the gangs could loose. That then created a reason not to do things that would loose it. Some of the gangs and individual gang members learnt positive things from those schemes. Many of these projects failed because of miss use or even crimes being used with government funded vehicles. But a lot of good came from those schemes. Employment, education and social standard do play a part in the big picture.
Do you ever wonder who the people are who are beating, stabbing, shooting and killing each other? Why are these things happening in this “peace loving” country? For some people even home life is not peaceful. Schools in many areas are wear the future gang members learn that groups have an advantage. Not all of New Zealand is clean and green. We have some suburbs now resembling ghettoes in the US. The market for drugs in these areas is high. It is a softer way to accept the hard surroundings. So selling drugs in these neighbourhoods is the obvious way to get the easy money and often it falls on the gangs to be able to provide the merchandise. Prison does not have the fear factor for those used to living in suburbs where they know plenty of people who have been there and lived. Or know people still in there. Gangs are strong in prison and the support there will be enough to help their time there go easier then for those who are not in gangs. Because of this recruitment from the prison population is frequent.

How is a gang defined?
If the definition is too broad then it could include many of our sports clubs, hobby clubs and other special interest groups.

The Police define Gangs in 3 types in 1980.
1 Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs
2 Maori/Polynesian Ethnic Gangs
3 White/European Gangs

Because there are different types of gangs there are different types of structure. But for a patched gang the following is common with some variations. Some unorganised gangs have no structure and the leadership is rested on the members who have the strongest personalities and reputations.

Ranking within a patched Gang
Levels of involvement can be described as the following.
1 Supporter (those who support the gang through drinking in their Clubhouse bar, goes to their parties and who sometimes verbally supports them to other people they know. Some people claim to support gangs so they can get some protection)
2 Associate (those who support the gang to another level, they are more likely to be back up at fights for the patch members and prospects, they are well known by other gang members as being an associate)
3 Prospect (those who are wishing to be a full member of the gang, they are waiting for some time to prove they are loyal and will stay with the gang, they must show they are willing to stand strong. They must do what they are told and get to know what the gang expects of them).
4 Patch member/Full Member (these are the main men, they are the ones who hold up gang policies and keep the name strong and respected, within the gang HQ/Pad they are the kings and masters)
5 Officers - President, Vice President, Sergeant of Arms, Secretary, Treasurer, and Public relations. (These vary depending on the gang. Each of these will be the guys who work harder than anyone else; often there is one man who holds it all together).

The attraction of gangs is often image related so the names of the gangs reflect the image those in it wish to portray. Strong names are attractive to people who are searching for the strength and image that those names portray. Some gang names are anti social and offensive. With racially oriented gangs the names will reflect their racial culture and possibly pride for their race.

Many gang members have some form of reasoning abilities. This makes many gangs able to do well in communities as well as the bad that they are usually marked by the media as doing. In many streets where gangs have their headquarters the locals are ok about them being there, because in that one street very little crime (if any) is done. Many gangs are able to uphold their own law and order, and it is often more severe then the punishments that the courts hand out.
Not many people would actually want their children to join gangs. The word gang brings the negative thoughts strait away, and the media use this to good effect. But there are many different kinds of gangs. Each has their own history and mythology and lye style.

Maori/Polynesian Gangs are mainly street based gangs who are found in most poor suburbs of New Zealand. (There are Ethnic Motorcycle Clubs as well like Tribesmen, Head Hunters, HU HU and in there have been chapters of patched street gangs set up as a motorcycle club arm of their national gang).
Some street gangs are not highly organised but some have the potential with their man power and the right leaders to be political movements and make a large impact on our society, the Mongrel Mob and Black Power are the main two ethnic street gangs and have hundreds of members each with thousand of supporters and associates. These numbers growing and with new subculture coming to New Zealand like ‘Home Boys’, a staging ground for future patched gang members starts with them.
In some towns ‘Homies’ have been approached by local ethnic gangs and told to either join them or stop wearing the colours. For example in Christchurch many Bloods who also wear red scarfs were told they could only wear red scarfs if they supported the Mob. Many Crips also went to supporting Black Power in some cities

The Polynesian Panthers who eventually became the King Cobras were formed as a reaction to seeing the Black Panthers in the USA. Black Power could have also received some of their political movement ideas to the Black rights movements in the USA, South Africa, Ethiopia and Jamaica. The Rasta movement was a big part of Maori/Polynesian groups during the 1980’s.
Most chapters of patched street gangs are into American and British motor cycles along with American cars. These are prised possessions and have been the targets of gang attacks as a way to hurt enemy member’s most cherished property.

Gang Uniform
Leather Jackets steel capped boots or sometimes gum boots, as well as anything else. Leather pants or Reggie denim jeans (There is no rules for them to wear any of these however and even though they may be the common clothing of a patched street gang member, it is not always the case).
Supporters of the Mob wear red and white scarfs and supporters of the Black Power wear blue and white scarfs or black and white scarfs. King Cobras wear a side patch, but often try to wear low profile looking clothes.
It is standard uniform for a “Half Jacket” or “Cut-off” (leather or denim vest) with colours/patch (gang emblem) on the back, usually covering the back. “Rockers” have the names and place of the gang. The name usually goes on the top rocking downwards and the place on the bottom rocking upwards. There are some exceptions, like on older patches or with some of the Mongrel Mob branches who wear their faction name at the bottom like ‘Notorious’ or ‘Rogue’. Prospects sometimes have a small side patch when they have been prospecting for a few months.

Ethnic Gang History
The First Maori Polynesian Ethnic gangs are claimed to be the originators of the King Cobras and the Mongrel Mob, known then as “The Mongrels”. Both formed in the 50’s making them the first gangs to establish in New Zealand and still be in existence now.

Mongrel Mob, Mighty Mongrel Mob, Aoteroa (AT’s), Notorious, Rogues, Red Coats, Greasy Dogs ( Northland, Auckland x 5 chapters, Waikato, King Country, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Taupo, Gisborne, Hastings/Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, , Porirua, Petone, Lower Hut, Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill and more)

Examples of Mongrel Mob Patches

Formed in Hastings in 1956 by a group of European Youth who are said to have been called ‘a pack of Mongrels’ by judge during court proceedings that were held for crimes they had committed. Some say it was a pack Rape.
They called themselves the Mongrels from then on until they became the Mongrel Mob in the early 1960’s

There are some usage of Nazi regalia and other right wing emblems. A lot of this is for shock value and to ‘spin people out’. The original European membership can explain some of it. During this time in England the National Front was called the Mob, and they used the Bull Dog as an emblem. The Bull Dog is the most predominant feature on all Mongrel Mob Patches. The way the Bull Dog is drawn varies from chapter to chapter. They are known to use other right wing symbols such as the swastika and confederate flags etc. There salute is taken from the Nazi’s as well, this being “Siege F--k’n Hail” or “Siege F--k’n Hell”. The story behind the three fingers being down in the middle comes from an old member who had these three fingers missing and other members copying him when saluting. This became their universal salute.

Black Power, Sindi, Te Whata Mana, Gypsies (Northland, Auckland, Waikatoe, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Taupo, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wellington, Christchurch, Invercargill and others)

Examples of Black Power Patches

The Black Power was started around 1968, by a group of young urban, predominantly Maori youth. Initially on the streets of Wellington and Auckland, this gang has spread to other major centres and rural towns.
The Black Power claim on their website to be a multi cultural organization including Maori, NZ Europeans, Samoan, Tongan and Cook Islanders.
The Black Power salute is the fist facing forward.
Te Whata Mana is a family support group set up by the Black Power.
A gang called Gypsies has been the name for the female chapter of the Black Power. This may be defunct now.
Munga Kaha (Auckland, Waikatoe, Taupo, Christchurch, Dunedin)
Offshoot from Black Power, originally the culture group for the Black Power.

Nomads (Wairarapa/Horiwhenua)
Founded 1977 by members of the Black Power who wanted to be part of a smaller more effective group. They have become one of the most well known gangs in New Zealand. They have a staunch reputation that has encouraged most other gangs to leave them alone. They are the undisputed predominant gang in the towns they are based in.

a skinhead prisoner was last night on life support in Christchurch Hospital after being beaten up by Mongrel Mob members the day after being transferred from another jail.

The 33-year-old suffered a fractured skull after an apparent hit by the gang members at Christchurch Men's Prison on Friday morning.

He had been transferred from Dunedin Prison the day before.

Police would not name the man, but said he had been serving a three-year sentence since 2004.

Prison sources said he was hit over the head with a blunt instrument in his cell about 9am. He was then rolled off the balcony on to a concrete floor. Witnesses believed he must have been unconscious when he was pushed off the balcony, as he landed on his head. At hospital he was given head and spinal x-rays and was last night in a serious but stable condition.

Prison sources speculated the attack must have been over an existing issue because the man had spent only one night in prison.

They said the man was affiliated with white supremacists.

This is a nz hiphop video filmed in otara, south auckland, it dosent show either BP or MM but it has the area and neighborhoods they operate in
Im hail from Otara where this video was shot as well as the movie "Once were warriors". Have Mob Members round here with the main gang being the Tribesmen. But probably can relate to other ghetto people in here who have grown up or been involved in gangs
In my eyez you either have various levels of these street gangs
- Wannabe's: your posers etc
- Territorial groups/neighbourhood gangs: probably the cause of most of the pointless deaths that have been happenin around here. its like every other street has a group/gang wanting to defend their street/turf. The music video above was done by some young local homies (BTW)
- Junior Affiliated Gangs: Younger gangs who are a bit more organized who eventually graduate to the more organized, established gangs. Like the Killer Beez who "graduate" to Tribesmen, Jnr Crip boyz --> Black Power etc etc
- Organized Gangs: Tribesmen, Mongrel MoB, Black Power, King Cobra's, Head Hunters, etc
I agree with my Porirua brudda in that BP-Mob violence has quietened down.. ppl probably more concerned on gettin that "P" money (thats Ice or Meth) .

One Mob guy I grew up with went on what the media called a Meth crime spree recently doing stand overs on other P houses. He was on the news as being highly dangerous but id see him gettin milk from the local shops.

Or the other day some BP associate stopped at a local liquor store to fill up when he run into some local Killer Beez (one of the Jnr gangs started by some kid in my neighbourhood). They told him to take off his patch.. cos they see as their turf, this particular neighbourhood. This BP refused so these bunch of kids bout 10 of them beat him down with their motorbike helmuts. I hear he was being stomped on for a good 5 to 10 minutes and looked like he was dead. Anyways some other BP guys happen to come to his rescue and run the car into a few of the kids who made a get away on their bikes.
The BP guys then set fire to 2 of the bikes b4 taking off. By the time the police got there there was no one there at all... just some burnt out bikes.

Some local caught it on tape and put the end of it on youtube

But anywayz man been reading this site for a while and thought id add my 2 cents to this conversation.

Unread post by DOLG » March 27th, 2007, 6:50 pm

That race is brown your colour blind it could have black if you know what black looks like but there brown just like im white europ just got spanish blood and fijian blood in me but really they should meet the el savadora there more leathel then all the gangs put together cause if you try leave they will kill your whole family every single one they got ak47 and m16 they do what mongrel mobb do but 50 % have been trained in the army so they got specialised people for different areas there like arabs and also like asians so who knows maybe they may become big over here one day then other gangs will fear cause they got connections in 33 states in america they may even have some in australia.

Any way thats all i got foe now.
