West Side Story (1961)

Unread post by wcrockets » December 27th, 2003, 2:17 pm

The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh

I think Rita Moreno is the only person to have won an Emmy (TV), Grammy (Music), Tony (Theatre), and Oscar (Movie) awards. And the gangs in that movie where the Jets and the Sharks, right?

Yes the Sharks were Puerto Rican and the Jets were white. Leonard Berstein did the excellent score on it.

"Maria Maria . . . I want to live in a America, I want to live in America . . . Maria Maria"

Two songs ringing in my head constantly especially since I had to listen to them in my calculus class (band playing outside every day).

I love the depiction of the sharks.

West Side story is a goo movie and an even better play, its part of NY culture way back in the 60s i believe, one of the first broadway plays to have ethnic diversity and interacial love scenes. It was boycotted because of its social commentary, its about the gang war between ricans and whites on the west side of manhattan. dont knock it before youve seen it or how about you get alittle cultured, throw on a suit and some bigori shoes, go pick up a nice lady and take her down to broadway to see a play

Some people don't like it because it is a musical.
