Five men have been arrested in connection with the smuggling of at least 2,100 kilos of cocaine from Ecuador to the Netherlands, news agency ANP reports.

The drug was found hidden in an consignment of cacoa beans in Antwerp port at the weekend and allowed to continue by the Belgian authorities. The shipment, in four separate containers, was allowed to continue to its final destination - an industrial estate in Emmeloord, north east of Amsterdam.

The cocaine, said to have a street value of more than €100m by the Telegraaf, was hidden in some 2,000 packages and distributed in jute sacks in four containers.

Four of the men come from Amsterdam, the fifth from Luttelgeest. Two of the men tried to escape by leaping into a ditch at the back of the building but were caught by a police dog.

Dutch jailed for 50 years for cocaine smuggling

Eight foreigners, including two Dutch nationals, have each been sentenced to 50 years in prison by a court in Gambia, news agency AP reports.

A third Dutch citizen who was charged in the case died while incarcerated, officials told AP.

Four Venezuelans, one Nigerian and a Mexican citizen pleaded not guilty to the charges alongside the Dutch. The arrests led to the seizure of two tons of cocaine.

AP says countries along Africa's west coast have become major trafficking hubs for cocaine on its way from Latin American to the European market.

Dutch are involved in everything.

Airport catering staff arrested for cocaine smuggling

Police and customs officials have arrested 11 catering workers at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport for their role in a cocaine smuggling network between the Netherlands and the Antilles islands in the Caribbean.

The gang reportedly smuggled the drugs in catering trolleys and airline waste bags, Nos tv reports.

A 12th person who does not work at the airport has also been arrested. Police have seized 50 kg of cocaine as well as computers and cars.

The investigation into the smuggling route began last year and resulted in eight arrests on the island of Bonaire last month. More arrests are expected, Nos said.
