Murder is Calgary's 17th of the year (Calgary)
Gunfire erupted yet again on city streets Tuesday night, resulting in Calgary's 17th homicide of 2006 -- and the third confirmed slaying in less than a week.
The latest killing happened just before 8:30 p.m., when someone shot a man during a melee in the 600 block of 12th Avenue S.E.
"It may be gang-related. It doesn't appear to be random. The victim may have known his assailants," Duty Insp. Barry Cochran said.
Investigators said an altercation between several men inside the Island Roots Cafe spilled onto the street and someone opened fire.
"I heard a couple of pops and then there were sirens," said a man who only gave his name as Bill.
The victim -- whom the Herald is not identifying pending notification of his family -- was a father with young children who was born and raised in Calgary, a friend at the scene said.
"I don't know the reason for this," said Henry White, shaking his head in disbelief.
More than a dozen potential witnesses sat on a city transit bus while police sorted out the chaotic scene and searched for suspects.
Others were handcuffed and taken for questioning, including a man found by a K-9 officer in a garage near Olympic Way and 12th Avenue S.E.
Tuesday night's homicide was the ninth shooting in the city since mid-June. At least three were confirmed to be gang-related.
An 18-year-old was hit by up to eight bullets and another man was injured around 3 a.m. June 18 when a shooter opened fire during a reggae dance at the Marlborough Community Association.
It's believed there is a link between that shooting and an Aug. 17 incident in a Falconridge car wash that forced one man to seek medical attention for an arm wound.
Police sources said the victim has ties to the Clipper gang, which has been involved in various shootings.
