They are all about the same i guess u could say, because in the early 1900's,there was a was a war between the only two powerful mobsters,it was Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano, and it was called the Castlammerese War.When Masseria was eliminated,Maranzano Divided New York into 5 families. Then after he too was executed. The movie "Mobsters" is all about this war.

Yeah, thats right. So Genovese is the most powerful family now, with Quiet Dom Cirillo in charge right? Gambino's is like a shinking ship I've heard nowadays, Gotti dead, Gotti jr. in jail etc.

My bad, Cirillo had a heart attack, I think Paul Zito is acting boss when Gigante's locked up.Dunno really, theres a lot confusion abt Genovese.

John Gotti Jr is an idiot, look what he got arrested for and how the police got some of their evidence..

He better do something rapid to show who's the boss when he gets out or else he'll be dealt with pretty quik. Find out where they're hiding Gravano and take him out or something.

John Gotti has made many statements that he will not take over when he gets out and wants to retire. Right now there has been a shift in power and they are rebuilding with some very capable people at the helm. The Corozzo brothers are running things, Zeke is there and proved he can do time, there are someone in Conneticut and Lenny DeMaria is getting out very soon. These guys will reubuild if they can avoid indictement....which you don't see much now a days.

Still, Genovese with Cirillo's lieutenants, himself(although he got health problems)outside of the pen is more powerful right now, plus they're not known for having many penititi's.. But Gambino will always be there, no doubt. Didn't know about the new peeps there trying to take control, that'd be a good move tho, because as I said, John Gotti Jr. is a fucking idiot. Thanks for letting us know man..props.

Yeah they are the official power in the Gambinos now. Nick C was suppose to take over five years ago, but he went in with Lenny. I wouldn't call it taking of power as everyone wanted it and Junior and Peter Gotti weren't going to argue.

The Genovese are a cut above the rest as they can insulate their power better then anyone. They are by far the super power of NY. They seem to run on a panel basis(still have a boss though) so therefore there power is more spread out. The last thing that i read in the news was about the murder of Cirillo's son, but apparently he was a user and although heartbroken the kid wasn't well liked and the matter is probably closed. Also does anyone remember the Gallo brothers? The other brother Albert "Kid Blast" Gallo is a high ranking member of the Genovese.

True, Genovese is where's the real power is due to their structure and the way that they insulate power. Anyways, when is Chin getting outta the pen? And what's up with Cirillo's health problems, he's ok now or what?

The Chin is pretty well done, he is due out in 2010 and that would make him 86. A lot of people don't make it that high in the can. Dom is also old, but he still gets around. There are a lot of people other then him who handle business on the street, he is more a go-to guy. And remember the Genovesse has a long history of frontman as bosses, that is helpful to their success.

Contrary to popular opinion, the five New York families were already formed before the Castellamarese War from 1929-1931.

The five families were –

The Masseria family (later the Genovese family)

The Maranzano family (later the Bonanno family)

The Mineo family (later the Gambino family)

The Reina family (later the Lucchese family)

The Profaci family (later the Colombo family)
