I am a "white" (Jewish) woman and I used to work in Bedford Stuyvesant, supposedly a "dangerous" neighborhood in Brooklyn. I was the only white person that I ever saw for the year that I worked there.
I took the subway to and from work and sometimes left the office (alone occasionally) after dark, like 6:30 PM or 7 PM and locked up the building and went to the subway.
Part of my job was to visit people at home (I am a social worker) and I went into some nearby neighborhoods and rang doorbells of my client's homes.

I never had a problem the whole year.
To be honest, no one even gave me a funny look the whole time I was in Bed Stuy. I went out to the McDonald's for lunch every day, went to the drugstore to run errands, went to the post office next door, on the subway, etc. Literally no one ever looked at me strange like I didn't belong there.

Some people were nice and as they passed me by on the street said "How are you doing today?" and "Have a blessed day."

I think what people said before is true: if you have business being there and you take care of your business and seem to know what you are doing, show respect to people, act normally, then people will be respectful to you in return.

lets be serious here. when since has 6:30 to 7 pm been considered late? the sun is still outside, Its not safe for a black woman or any woman in fact walking thru certain parts of the Sty at night by themselves - let alone a white woman. youre a social worker or a child cop as we call em in H world, it wouldnt be wise to mess with a social worker and the people in the neighborhood are the least of your worries - its the parents of whom you might take the kids from and then you still have police escorts for homes labeled a problem. Youre right on the whole respect issue, but seriously im a grown man and smart enough to acknowledge that its not safe for ME to walk down nostrom ave at 2am alone without a ratchet....so honestly i cant picture a white women trekking thru marcy but you do what you do and do it well.
