Tuco's answer :

Hell yeah ! I've read a review of the stage version made in 2000 at the sundance lab (before Training Day was made), and it was astounding. The interview of Ayer that followed the review was great also. He was so passionned about his material that his enthusiasm was contagious. Let's hope that his first directorial debut will start with a bang. Reading about the guy's life, if Ayer earn a great success with this film it would be justice. I sincerly hope that his achievement will be successful enough to follow his dreams...

For those who are interested, the only photo of Harsh Times available on the net is on Christian Bale's official website. Here's the link :

http://www.christianbale.net/home800.htm
Go to pictures, then magazines, then MovieMaker.

On this picture, Bale is looking like a real vato !

For the stage review of Harsh Times and the David Ayer's interview, the link, on modern fix website, is, unfortunately, not available anymore.

I doubt it would work, it would probably be a flop and wouldnt be able to live up to the Al Pacino Scarface.

Carlito's Way was often named "scarface 2"

A lot of remakes or sequels fail to live up to the original (Italian Job, Get Carter wiv Stallone...), i also think the time difference would be a problem as it would have to use new actors (1983-2005).

I suppose a modern day film set in a similar storyline etc.. to Scarface could be good. I always think of "New Jack City" and Nino Brown as being the ghetto Scarface.

The Superman, Ironman, and The Transformers movies sound pretty cool. and Spiderman 3 will probably be a good movie, but what would make these Hollywood movie producers stoop so low as to make a Miami Vice movie????? :( I mean... it was a great TV show and all but a movie???

Tuco's answer :

The Miami Vice movie is not gonna be a hype flashy thing like the show. No. Michael Mann only kept the original title and the names of the main characters (Crockett, Tubbs, Castillo, Switek, Zito, Calabrese, Joplin) because these are his properties and many studios wanted him to make a movie out of this "franchise". But it will be a dark, harsh movie, set today about drug trafficking. Crockett & Tubbs will not be a 'Giorgio Armani' walking commercials, they will be a team of mean undercover cops in the vein of Frank Serpico and Alonzo Harris. The script will be dealing with streetgangs like the Nazi Lowriders, Prison gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood, Colombian Drug Gangs, right-wing paramilitary milicias, cops on cocaine, and so on...Not really the average Miami Vice episode, and I'm a big fan of the show. Mann promised to make a film close to Heat and will have practically very little relation with the TV show. As a matter of fact, Mann used in the Miami Vice script a lot of elements from one of his early scripts he wrote with Shane Salerno (Shaft, Night Train) about drug trafficking network in the prisons and streets of Southern California. This script was complete but Mann abandoned it after Soderberg's Traffic hit the theaters.

So, to me, I think the Miami Vice movie will be ( I hope ) another piece of work from the guy who gave us such great crime dramas as Thief, Manhunter, Heat and Collateral...

And I forgot, the great RZA will score Miami Vice, forget about Jan Hammer's synthetiser...

The project had just been greenlit. But it will be a HBO film and be released directly on DVD. I guess it will be available before the end of the year if everything go smooth...
