I would say there were very few countries in that time strong enough to defeat Japan. At the end of their day their blind fanaticism lost them the war.

Hmm i d say all cultural development in all areas of the world developes with ups and downs.
While merely nothing was going on in Europe, the chinese had a really highly developed culture.
Then it stagnated at the same time it stagnated in Europe, in the middle ages.
and now china is back on their way, after europeans had their time the last 300-400 years.
