Maryland Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Blocks away from a dock where enslaved men and women arrived in chains more than 240 years ago, Maryland's Senate approved a resolution Friday apologizing for slavery, joining other states that have considered formal statements recently to atone for slavery's wrongs.

The resolution expresses "profound regret" for the role Maryland played instituting and maintaining slavery and "for the discrimination that was slavery's legacy."

State Sen. Nathaniel Exum, who is sponsoring the Maryland resolution, said he believed it was needed, because no one has ever apologized for the great pains slavery caused in Maryland from its earliest days as a colony until 1864. Exum said he believed a formal apology could help improve race relations "if everyone takes it to heart."

"I just hope there's a vision that we all can exist, live together in harmony, and government truly will be of the people by the people and for the people," Exum, D-Prince George's, said in an interview before the Senate vote.

A similar resolution is pending in the House this session. If it passes there, Maryland would be the second state to issue such an apology.

Virginia's legislature passed a resolution last month also expressing "profound regret" for that state's role in slavery. Lawmakers in Missouri and Congress have proposed similar measures. In Georgia on Thursday, a panel of lawmakers signed off on a plan to create a Confederate heritage month, but legislative leaders in Atlanta reacted cooly to a push to apologize for the state's role in slavery.

The resolution carried in Maryland by a 44-0 vote.

"I guess there's more awareness, and everyone wants to be fair and treat people as human beings more now than there has been previously," Exum said about recent slavery-apology movements.

Sen. Ulysses Currie, D-Prince George's, said he believed it was important to formally recognize and apologize for the wrongs of slavery for future generations.

"Until you admit that there was a problem and there was slavery, we continue to run and hide from it," Currie said.

The Annapolis City Council also is considering a resolution calling to atone for the city's "participation in the involuntary servitude of African men, women and children and calls for reconciliation among all citizens of Annapolis."

The Maryland capital once played a prominent role in slavery. In the 1700s, slave ships docked just blocks away from the State House, and thousands of enslaved men and women arrived in the town.

Author Alex Haley was doing research about his ancestors when he came across a newspaper clipping that the Lord Legionier had arrived in Annapolis in 1767. Among them, according to Haley, was one of his ancestors, Kunta Kinte.

A plaque marking Kunta Kinte's arrival was placed at the dock in 1981. In 2002, a full-fledged memorial was completed at the dock.

A resolution to apologize for slavery passed the Maryland Senate last year, but the state's House of Delegates took no action on the resolution.

My memory of slavery is kind of blury but weren't the slaves sold to the Americans from their own kind? Weren't there slaves in Africa, and their owners were their own kind? I'm not trying to sound racist or anything, just want to know the history.

Apologizing for slavery isn’t enough

A Virginia legislator created a stir recently when he said Whites living today shouldn’t apologize for slavery. The rancid stench of state-sponsored racism extended well into the 1960s. So, if there is to be an apology in Virginia or any other state, it should not be limited to slavery.

Consider the following taken from the National Park Service web site that I recount in some of my speeches:

From the 1800s into the mid-1960s, there were Jim Crow laws mandating separation of the races.They were comprehensive, covering every imaginable circumstance such as toilet facilities, railroads, buses, education, the selling of wine and beer, restaurants, housing, parks, hospital entrances, prisons, textbooks, libraries, circus tickets, theaters, reform school, fishing, lunch counters, theaters, telephone booths, cemeteries, and, above all intermarriage.

Let’s look at a few of them:

Mississippi: “There shall be maintained by the governing authorities of every hospital maintained by the state for treatment of white and colored patients, separate entrances for white and colored patients and visitors, and such entrances shall be used by the race only for which they are prepared.”

Georgia had one governing mental hospitals that provided: “The Board of Control shall see that proper and distinct apartments are arranged for said patients, so that in no case shall Negroes and white persons be together.”

Blacks and Whites not only couldn’t interact on a normal basis while they were alive, they were even kept apart after they had died.

A Georgia law stated, “The officer in charge shall not bury, or allow to be buried, any colored persons upon ground set apart or used for the burial of white persons.”

These Jim Crow laws were rigorously enforced against children as well as adults.

Not only could the Jim Crow laws not be violated, Southern customs were also enforced.

In 1958, in Monroe, N.C., two Black boys-—Fuzzy Simpson, age 7, and Hanover Thompson, age 9, were invited to join a group of five White children, including two girls. One of the girls remembered that she had played with Hanover when his mother worked as a maid in her family’s house. Overjoyed at being reunited with her old playmate, she kissed him on the cheek.

That wasn’t quite the kiss of death but it was close. When the girl innocently told her mother, the two boys were arrested, and convicted of attempted rape. The Juvenile Court judge sentenced Fuzzy to 12 years in jail and Hanover to 14. Fortunately, there was a public outcry and President Eisenhower got the governor to intervene [Kennedy, P. 197-198].

Let me say something...

Yes, there were tribes all thru AFrica that warred with each other, and in fact enslaved there enemies...including wives, and sometimes even kids..Civil Wars are nothing new across the world..that's why they are civil wars..Watch the movie "Sometimes in April", about the Rwanda Genocide...620,000 rwandans killed in a very short time..And they even openly showed Euro-whites, shipping in goods to the stronger, while leaving the weak for dead.

It doesnt take from the fact that millions of africans, were stolen out of there house and homes, and shipped over here to be sold, enslaved, later freed, only to be hunted down again, by various hate groups..the KKK being the oldest, and most hateful of them all..

Dont think any state can apologize..Remember our beloved president George Washington had slaves.If he was such a great man why didn't he see the wrong in enslaving people, and free them???

Aplogizing for slavery opens them up for liability.....any person that could prove they are descendants of slaves in that state could sue......that's why Congress won't apologize....especially in writing....

Georgia had one governing mental hospitals that provided: “The Board of Control shall see that proper and distinct apartments are arranged for said patients, so that in no case shall Negroes and white persons be together.”

Blacks and Whites not only couldn’t interact on a normal basis while they were alive, they were even kept apart after they had died.

A Georgia law stated, “The officer in charge shall not bury, or allow to be buried, any colored persons upon ground set apart or used for the burial of white persons.”

These Jim Crow laws were rigorously enforced against children as well as adults.

Not only could the Jim Crow laws not be violated, Southern customs were also enforced.

In 1958, in Monroe, N.C., two Black boys-—Fuzzy Simpson, age 7, and Hanover Thompson, age 9, were invited to join a group of five White children, including two girls. One of the girls remembered that she had played with Hanover when his mother worked as a maid in her family’s house. Overjoyed at being reunited with her old playmate, she kissed him on the cheek.

That wasn’t quite the kiss of death but it was close. When the girl innocently told her mother, the two boys were arrested, and convicted of attempted rape. The Juvenile Court judge sentenced Fuzzy to 12 years in jail and Hanover to 14. Fortunately, there was a public outcry and President Eisenhower got the governor to intervene [Kennedy, P. 197-198].

Yes, there is plenty to apologize for, but it doesn’t stop with slavery.

Who the f*ck said i was Black.It's good this is not a Black mans forum cause i ain't Black.Atleast not as Black as in American standards.Last time i checked Christina is white,Sentenza,Johnnny.Man most people here are White.I bet there are more White people on this forum then Blacks and probably some of the Blacks on this forum are really White.

Shouldn't matter to you none, LW, you're not black, it's our concern, our beef and we dont really care what "others" think or how "others" feel. It's a situation we black folks have to figure out.

nah i get you odwog, i didnt mean to offend you, i was just asking X, why every other thread he talks about the "jim crow laws". i never said forget them, i just said why does he keep bringing them up. they should most deff not be forgotten or ignored, but he constantly brings them up out of the blue unnecessarily. and he talks soo much shit about how amerikkka is bad for blacks and such, yet they're are thousands of black people in haiti, the congo, ivory coast, sierra leone, south africa, somolia, zimbabwe, and all over the world who would love to immigrate to america. he sees the country as an obsticle for blacks, yet these poor people living in third world countries would find america as a way out, as freedom. and i dont think his lazy ass understands that.

im no american patriot or white supremecist, and wouldn't go fight in any war or anything for it. but, i can stand him talking about how bad this country is, when they're are so many people all over the world who would love to come to america and work in a car wash or as a doorman to escape the horrible problems in they're country, yet he's here talking about how bad it is for his people. yeah, they're are prejudices, but if it really was that bad, all these people wouldn't want to come here.
