I don't know the TRUE meaning of METROPOLITAN vs CITY. Can someone explain the difference to me? LA-Long Beach, how do we define that as ONE Metro Area? Something like LA County?

That's a trip because your list has Compton on it which does not have anywhere near 500,000+ population (more like 120k?). Good info though, and you are right about your 2nd list, Louisiana looks like they have real problems (4 outta top 11....damn).

Ya know something, i've lived all over the place and have experienced a lot. to this day OAKLAND IS probably the hardest place. I'm from oakland, and i'm not saying because i'm from there. I was born and raised there with the exeption of 2 years of my life that was spent in little rock, ar. which is pretty hard. i've been through baltimore, k.c., louisville, st. louis, all through l.a. my wife is from the east side of compton by the way, mob/lueders park hood. The military has taken me to a host of places and currently i'm stationed in washington d.c. stats tell one story, experience tells another. The flat lands of east oakland are some of the hardest areas i've been through. let me not forget the late 80's early 90's when the population was about 300,000, oakland averaged about 180 murders. most of these were contributed the drug wars not gang wars that ravaged oakland. Check yall's history. Even the hip-hop magazine the source will tell you that the movie juice, was actually based on a drug lord named felix mitchell, when mario van peebles was out in oakland he saw the funeral. that's where the movie juice comes from.

lol wrd gts.. i used to live on paul ave in the bayview district. The only reason why frisco is "labeld safe" is because of the other nice places, however frisco keeps getting worse and worse, like the 6 murders in 1 week in bayview, overall frisco has a worse crime rate then a good one, out of national avg it ranks a lot higher then it should, as far as murder, robbery and assault.

Following Southfield in major crime is Pontiac, with more than 4,500 cases; and Troy, with more than 2,284 major crimes.

Major crime includes murder, rape, robbery and auto theft. So how do the cities rank when you talk specific crimes?

The Oakland County city with the most murders is Southfield, with five. Pontiac has the most rapes, with 90.

The Defenders discovered a majority of cases are reported in the downtown area. When it comes to robbery, Pontiac has the most cases in Oakland County, with 187.

According to the numbers, with nearly 600,000 residents, DC had 262 murders last year. Outranking all major cities, and is again the nation's "murder capital."

I'm sure the same could be said about rolling through Watts or specific parts of L.A. or any crime ridden city for that matter.

2003 Chicago finished with 599 homicides. That was down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600.

Still, the nation's third-largest city outpaced all others for the second time in three years. NEW YORK, with about three times the population, ended the year with 596 homicides.

LOS ANGELES had the most murders in 2002 at 658, wound up 2003 with an estimated total just under 500.

I'm not sure if some of you guys realize the original stats that I posted are per 100,000 people and OVERALL CRIME. I don't dispute none of your cities are crazy, but these are governement reports.

EPA had less people than that in 1992... more like 15,000 - 20,000... so that makes the murder rate back then even more crucial.

gary indiana and compton had the highest murder rates last year... i think gary had 59 homicides and compton had like 48-52

The survey used 2002 FBI statistics, for U.S. cities with a population of 75,000 or greater, and the kinds of crimes included were murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. While certainly Atlanta has its share of crime like any big city, I find the survey flawed if Atlanta is determined to be more dangerous than the gang and crime ridden L.A. suburb of Compton, California, which ranked #6 on the survey. Having grown up just outside of Compton, which now is idolized and talked about among today's gangsta rappers, I definitely can say I feel much safer in Atlanta. It seems to account for population differences, big cities should have been ranked separate from suburban towns.
