When i was coming up in the 1970 and 80s i never heard a Puerto Rican use the word nigga in regular speeech, nor did I hear Mexicans in LA saying nigga in the 1980s, but i would say in the early 1990s brown brothers say nigga, like they have been using it for decades.

I hear it nearly everyday from Mexicans in LA and the boricuas been doing that too. How do blacks feel about that, and why has the word become cross cultural?

I can only speak on my observation and perspective as to why the Brown Brothers be using the word nigga, (no dis' meant on my part), I beleive it to be in large part because more and more of our youngsters are less and less familiarized with our own slang. For instance I am very confortable with the spanish language of not only normal society but also the street lingo from both old and new Mejico, however my younger brother has real difficulties in communicating fluently in spanish, even though he's only 4 years younger than me, I noticed it also with other younger members of our family. It seems that if you affiliate youself too much with spanish speaking only people, wether in school or in the streets then you are looked down upon by even your own race which feels that you're not with the times and you must be some recent arrival, in putting this type of pressure on younger generations along with the mass media effort to integrate the whole nation and all the races, it is only natural that immitation of the english slang and dis' language would prevail over your native slang because it is understood by all and not just your own, but it also places you with the establishment and not the newbies. I hope that I was able to to explain myself on the subject.

Once mexicans decided to sport zoot suits, listen to and perform black music, amongst other things, I guess you can then solidly claim that they've lost their roots.
