Riverside gang member to be arraigned today for two counts of first-degree murder
RIVERSIDE - A Riverside gang member accused of gunning down a recent high school graduate and another teenager in a 2008 attack near the UC Riverside campus is slated to be arraigned today.
Arsenio Devo Morgan, 19, was charged May 25 with two counts of first-degree murder and multiple sentence-enhancing allegations, including that the shootings were part of a hate crime.
Morgan allegedly killed 18-year-old Salvador Soliz and 16-year-old Ramiro Sanchez on Dec. 14, 2008, to gain admittance to the 1200 Blocc Crips, a decades-old gang in Riverside.
The defendant, who is serving a six-year prison term for armed robbery, was identified by a police informant in April, according to the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
This will be Morgan's first court appearance since being transferred from state prison.
Detectives learned in 2008, Morgan was seeking to leave a small-time gang called Sex Cash in favor of joining the 1200 Blocc Crips. But in order to earn a place, he had to "put some work in -- literally, kill someone," District Attorney Rod Pacheco said during a news conference about the case last month.
Crips members told the defendant about a birthday party attended mostly by Hispanics at a residence in the 1800 block of Enterprise Avenue, and Morgan went there with the intent to kill, the county's top prosecutor alleged.
Around midnight, Morgan arrived at the party and opened fire on a group of celebrants standing in the driveway, Pacheco alleged.
Soliz, who had just graduated from Poly High School, died at the scene. Sanchez died less than an hour later at Riverside Community Hospital.
"The tragic shooting elevated the status of one violent gang member at the cost of two young lives simply because their killer believed they belonged to the wrong race," Pacheco said.

Sometimes they do state the actual gang. More so now than ever before. I was just trying to figure out if this is supposed to be East Coast Crips, or some other Crip set out there.tysuave wrote:I'm not understanding what"s you point? If these are the same 1200blocc crip that stay on the E/S in those crackerboxes between 11th, 12th, behind Town Square then they are indeed ECC, or at least thats what the hit ups said.
