Spate of shootings stirs up SoledadBy KEVIN HOWE Herald Staff Writer Article Last Updated: 09/08/2008 09:28:46 AM PDT
A woman was injured and an apartment complex and nearby parked cars were riddled with bullets in two shootings within 72 hours in Soledad.
Police Chief Richard Cox said that on Tuesday a woman was grazed on the left side of her face by a bullet in the 400 block of San Diego Place shortly before 10:30 p.m.
More than 20 shots were fired into the woman's home, he said. She was taken to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital by ambulance, where she was treated and released.
At 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Cox said, a fusillade of gunfire erupted in the 100 block of Buena Vista Park.
More than 30 shots from weapons identified by cartridge casings scattered at the scene as AK-47-style, semiautomatic rifles and .40-caliber pistols were fired, he said.
Witnesses reported seeing four people armed with rifles running from the area of Buena Vista, Cox said. No one was injured, he said. In both cases, he said, police officers from neighboring Greenfield and Monterey County sheriff's deputies responded.
Both incidents are believed to be gang-related, Cox said, and were under investigation as gang crimes.
