Six arrested in connection with slaying in Hayward barBy Gideon Rubin The Daily Review Article Last Updated: 09/10/2008 09:26:29 PM PDT
HAYWARD — Police raids at seven East Bay locations early Wednesday morning resulted in the arrests of six suspected gang members in connection with last month's fatal shooting of a Hayward man at a night club, authorities said. An argument at the Viper Lounge, 29308 Mission Blvd., led to 24-year-old Nathan Tuitasi's death at about 1:45 a.m. Aug. 30, police said. Authorities served five simultaneous warrants at 6 a.m. Wednesday — three at unincorporated Hayward locations, and the others at addresses in Union City and unincorporated San Leandro. Within an hour, the raids led authorities to two additional locations, one in unincorporated Hayward and the other in Hayward proper. Jason Jimenez Mejia, 20, of Hayward and two 17-year-old Hayward boys whose names police withheld were arrested on suspicion of murder and gang conspiracy, Lt. Christine Orrey said. Adelino Lee Lopes, 46, of San Leandro, and 26-year-old John Joseph Fragoza and 20-year-old John Wesley James, both of Hayward, were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and gang conspiracy, Orrey said. Fragoza was arrested in a raid on the 18000 block of Boston Road in Hayward and is being held on $100,000 bail, according to the Web site of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. James was arrested on the 300 block of Laurel Avenue in Hayward and is being held on $100,000 bail, while Mejia was arrested on the 27900 block of Edgecliff Way — also in Hayward — and is being held without bail. Lopes' custody status was not available. An additional suspect, whose name was being withheld by police, is still being sought in connection with the case. The raids involved 135 law enforcement personnel from Hayward and Union City police departments, the county Sheriff's Office, the Alameda County Narcotics Task Force, the Southern Alameda County Narcotics Enforcement Team and the Southern Alameda County Gang Violence Task Force. "The Hayward community has no tolerance for gang violence," Orrey said in a prepared statement. "Our police take an aggressive stance in preventing the proliferation of gangs in the streets of Hayward."
