Police: Antioch stabbing part of gang-driven crime spreeBy Robert Salonga Contra Costa Times Article Last Updated: 10/09/2008 07:29:38 PM PDT
ANTIOCH — The arrest of two men and a teenage girl following the Wednesday stabbing of a 16-year-old boy capped a whirlwind of crime committed by a group of known gang members, police said. After the stabbing, the group — identified by police as associates of the Sureño street gang — also robbed another teenager and then got into a fight at a local park before police ended their evening, said Antioch police Sgt. Diane Aguinaga. Police said the 16-year-old, affiliated with the rival Norteño gang, was standing at the corner of Eagleridge Drive and Mahua Way about 5:05 p.m. when a car carrying about six people pulled up next to him. "They were out looking for Norteños," Aguinaga said. The group then chased the teen on foot, and when they caught up with him, stabbed him several times before fleeing, police said. The victim staggered to his nearby home, and shortly thereafter a relative took him to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Among his injuries was a punctured lung. Meanwhile, the group went to Eaglesridge Park, about two blocks from the stabbing scene, and robbed a 14-year-old boy at knifepoint, Aguinaga said. Then the group, which by now had swelled to eight members, traveled to Harbour Park about a mile north and got into a fight with park patrons, Aguinaga said. This led to a disturbance call that drew a police response, and officers there detained two men and a 14-year-old girl based on descriptions given by the robbery victim. They were later identified by the stabbing victim from his hospital bed. The men have since been identified as Luis Gutierrez and Brayan Monge, both 18. The pair were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. Gutierrez was booked into County Jail in Martinez. He is being held without bail because he was on parole for a manslaughter conviction as juvenile. Monge is being held on a total of $160,000 bail in connection with both the stabbing and robbery. The girl, whose name was withheld because she is minor, was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
