Wearing red shirts and yelling, three Corning men were arrested early Friday evening when police broke up a potential fight just moments after the May Madness car cruise came to an end.
Antonio Lloyd Lewis, 20, Samuel Isael Ayala, 20, and Javier Renteria, 19, all of Corning, were arrested when, police said, members of the Norteño and Sureño street gangs came face-to-face at the intersection of Solano and Sixth streets in Corning.
“It appears members of the Norteño gang were following the Sureños,” Corning Police Office Jeremy White said.
During an on-site investigation, police found switchblade knives, a police scanner and a controlled narcotic, police said.
“The Norteños were the ones with the weapons, so it looks like they planned on jumping the Sureños,” Whitesaid said. “It looks like something big could have gone down.”
Whitesaid said no weapons were found on Sureño-gang members. But after walking around the block, they returned to taunt police and the rival gang members being arrested.
Lewis was booked into Tehama County Jail on suspicion of possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and participating in a criminal street gang. Bail was set at $38,000.
Ayala was booked into jail on suspicion of possession of a dangerous weapon, concealing a dirk or dagger, participating in a criminal street gang and intercepting and divulging police radio communication. Bail was set at $47,500.
Renteria was booked into jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled narcotic and participating in a criminal street gang. Bail was set at $35,000.
All three remained in custody Tuesday.
