Tanzania: Albino Killings Are Shaming the Nation

Unread post by Sentenza » October 27th, 2008, 10:51 am

Tanzania has been in the international limelight in recent months for a very wrong reason - the brutal killing of albinos in the Lake Zone regions.

From London to Adelaide and Cairo to Cape Town, the talk has not been of our much-vaunted political stability, or the potential the country harbours in terms of attracting foreign investment, but our failure or reluctance to protect this section of society from marauding killer gangs that continue to freely hunt down albinos as if they were rabbits.

Such is the concern beyond our borders that the European Parliament last week passed a unanimous resolution condemning the senseless killings. The resolution, among other things, calls on the Tanzanian authorities, local government authorities and civil society in general to collaborate in order to protect all albinos. It also urges Tanzanian MPs to do more to address the issue.

The murders have also been the subject of intense discussion in the international press. The killings in Kagera, Mara, Mwanza and Shinyanga regions have elicited horror even in countries with high levels of violent crime. A South African columnist recently wrote that the brutal killing and mutilation of albinos was unthinkable even in crime-hardened South Africa.

All this shows that not enough is being done to stem this murderous wave and ensure that albinos live and go about their business in peace. The handling of the issue by senior government officials and other bureaucrats has so far been limited to issuing statements and directives from the comfort of their air-conditioned offices. It is small wonder that the problem refuses to go away.

We understand that 173 suspects have been arrested so far in connection with albino killings in various regions, and we hope that these will be subjected to the full force of the law. However, arresting suspects and hauling them off to court alone is not enough.

One of the areas where more needs to be done is the provision of correct information and education as far as the perception of albinism is concerned. We fully concur with the European Parliament that the Government should undertake immediate action in promoting social awareness and providing information related to albinism and that such measures should particularly be implemented in rural areas, where people tend to be less educated and more superstitious.

They say Albinos are lucky charms and will bring wealth and luck. They ripped them apart and sold their body parts. With all respects due, but i agree to what you said. That superstitious bs needs to go in Africa.

People in Africa are very ignorant and poorly educated. For example, in many parts of Africa , they believe having sex with virgins cures h.i.v and because of this rape on infants is very high . I suspect they probably really do believe Albino's are voodoo demons or something or perhaps they are just flat out prejudice about black albino's being white in color. Either way Africa is a very poorly educated country full of ignorant people.
