NORTH BRUNSWICK -- A man arrested with an accomplice after a fatal shooting in North Brunswick and a wild chase up Route 1 into Edison last May pleaded guilty in court today to driving the get-away vehicle and injuring a passenger in another car he struck.

Andre Trott, 29, of Sandys, Bermuda, who authorities identified as a high-ranking member of the Bloods gang, pleaded guilty in Superior Court in New Brunswick to charges of aggravated assault, a second-degree crime carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Trott was originally charged with murder, but those were dropped.

Under a plea agreement, a prosecutor will recommend Trott receive an eight-year prison sentence and have to serve 85 percent of the term before being eligible for parole.

Trott, in handcuffs and leg shackles, wearing prison issue a green sweatshirt and work pants and with tattoos over his right eyebrow, stood in court Wednesday and repeatedly answered "Yes sir," to questions from Judge Frederick DeVesa. Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Warburton said the authorities will seek Trott's deportation after he completes the prison sentence.

Trott and Cadre Williams, 31, of Conley, Ga., were arrested in Edison less than an hour after Williams shot and killed 31-year-old Shakir McCray, of Roselle at about 11:45 a.m. May 7 during a drug deal in a parking lot at the Hearthwood apartment complex in North Brunswick, authorities said.

Trott drove himself and Williams in a Jeep Cherokee, traveling north on Route 1 and striking other cars as they were chased by police. The two became caught in traffic on a jughandle turn on Route 1 and Old Post Road in Edison, where Trott was captured.

Williams ran from the scene, with officers firing at him, then entered an Audi dealer and stole another car. He continued up the highway and turned down side streets before abandoning the vehicle and hiding in trash bin outside the Victoria Manor banquet hall on Woodbridge Avenue, where he was apprehended.

Both men were charged with murder. However, Williams hanged himself with a bed sheet May 9 in the Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick.

After the court hearing Wednesday, Warburton said the murder charge against Trott was dropped because authorities had no evidence that the defendant conspired with Williams to commit the murder.

Authorities said the shooting occurred during a drug deal involving marijuana.

Relatives of both Trott and McCray were at the courthouse Wednesday, but declined to comment.

Warburton said relatives will make statements at Trott's sentencing March 8.
