Have you ever wondered who our communities are named after? During the last five years There has been a push to rename Leimert Park to Africa Town by the Africa Town Coalition. The black area of Los Angeles, Compton, Leimert, Slauson Ave and Crenshaw Blvd are all named after white land developers of the early 20th century. If you knew some of their personal backgrounds you might be surprised. How do you feel about these names?????

1. The City of Compton was named after Griffith Dickerson Compton (1820-1905) in 1867. He was a Methodist minister that came from Stockton. By 1887 the settlers incorporated as an official town. Compton died in 1905 at the age of 85.

2. George Lafayette Crenshaw (1854-1937) was a banker and land developer in Los Angeles. He was born in Jasper, Missouri and he helped develop 10 communities in Los Angeles. Have you heard of Lafayette Square near Crenshaw & Venice where many black middle and upper middle class people live?

3. Jonathan Sayre Slauson (1829-1905) was born in Orange, New York and graduated from law school in 1854. He became mayor of Austin, NV and moved to Los Angeles in 1875 and became a banker and land developer.

4. Walter Leimert (1877-1970) was born to German immigrants in Oakland, CA. In 1927, he purchased 231 acres of land and named it Leimert and developed several homes in what is now Leimert Park.
