Help with tear tattoo explanation

Hey guys, i wanted to ask something. What does tear tattoo mean? I've heard it's something about murder or am i wrong? Anyway, my colleague from homework help for college decided to make a tear tattoo (don't ask, he's a drama queen) but I'm feeling a bit insecure about this one. What if he will be misunderstood?

I thought it meant each tear represented the death of a killed comrade.

Or each tear represents each person they killed themselves.
